Don't leave skin protection too late.

For many older Australians and people living with disability, skin can become vulnerable due to ageing, incontinence or lack of mobility. Taking preventative action today may help reduce the risk of irritation, skin damage and discomfort.

Why does skin become vulnerable?

Skin is the body’s natural protective barrier, helping to shield us from irritants, bacteria and infection. However, factors such as ageing, incontinence, moisture from sweat, and harsh cleansers, can weaken this barrier over time, leaving skin more vulnerable to damage.

Over time, skin can become thinner, drier and less resilient. Exposure to moisture and irritants, such as urine, can further weaken the skin’s natural defenses, increasing the risk of dryness, irritation, skin tears and Incontinence Associated Dermatitis (IAD). Reduced mobility, friction and pressure can also contribute to skin damage.
